UNIDO Pharos
training workshop in Havana, Cuba

The UNIDO Pharos training workshop for senior management
of enterprises and business consultants was implemented in
DISAIC Casa
Consultora, Havana, Cuba during 10-14 March 2008. The trainees were
welcomed by Ms. Alba Campos Diaz, (DISAIC, Director General), opening the
workshop. Ms. Alba Campos reviewed the UNIDO project history, workshop
objectives, importance of effective business advisory services for
industrial modernization programmes accordingly to best international
practices and possibilities of using UNIDO methodology and Pharos
software.

The workshop was run by Mr. Serge Golovanov, UNIDO International
Consultant and Director of EPIC, GOLEM IMS GMBH, Vienna, Austria.
The training session began with overview of approaches to enterprise
performance management, measurement and benchmarking, its strong
relation to strategic planning. The importance of these issues for
sustainable and productive business development in competitive business
environment and analysis of enterprise capacity for investment were
outlined. The detailed explanations and examples were presented why
UNIDO Pharos software suite provides entrepreneurs and policy makers
with unique simple and cost effective solution for evaluation of
achievements, presenting business results to prospective investors,
continuous improvement and developing best practices.
The options for establishing performance reference models in enterprise
growth against regional, national and international performance levels
in particular industrial sectors were presented to the audience as well
as its applicability to policy making support at the national
governmental level. The introduction of the UNIDO Pharos tools into
enterprise business environment is facilitated for large number of
enterprises by minimum implementation costs and change of existing
business processes while significantly improving knowledge capital and
entrepreneurs business culture.
The programme included review of case studies developed within previous
UNIDO upgrading programmes. It was enhanced by extensive discussions and
active participation of the trainees.
The workshop was attended by 19 participants representing
DISAIC specialists and senior managers from different industrial
enterprises. The trainees actively participated in the workshop and
contributed to its successful implementation. Each participant was
provided with CD-ROM contain the complete set of workshop materials and
UNIDO Pharos software (demo version) as well as the printouts of the
workshop programme. Each participant received the UNIDO Certificate
after the end of the workshop.

The workshop content was evaluated by the trainees and the DISAIC
Directorate as very positive, important and interesting one, providing
unique combination of methodological and practical content. The UNIDO
Pharos package provides non-proprietary independent platform for
preparing and selecting of enterprises for investments and modernization
programmes.

The options in establishing comprehensive follow-up programme for Cuban
enterprises in collaboration with DISAIC were discussed with Ms. Alba
Campos Diaz
(DISAIC's Director General), Ms. Marisel Sosa Porteiro (DISAIC's Director
of Information Consulting Department), Ms. Dolores Marrero
Permanyer (MINVEC, Directorate of International Organizations by
Ministry of External Collaboration) and Mr. Florentino Chacon Puig (UNIDO
Cuba).
The workshop raised awareness of UNIDO Pharos information
technology tools for business measurement and benchmarking in Cuba in
the following applications:

analysis of business results by enterprise
management,
-
evaluation of investment capacity by investors,
-
developing unified single platforms for comparing
enterprises in the selection process for investment and
modernization programmes,
-
implementing investments, innovations and continuous
improvement,
-
using the available information for policy making
support at the regional and national levels in real time,
-
running the performance audits of enterprises under
minimized costs and time for certification of achievements.
Positive results of the workshop, recommendations and
feedback by the participants as well as experience developed in
successful implementation of the
UNIDO Integrated Programme for Colombia
(Component II Quality, Productivity and Competitiveness of Colombian
Industries) and other
implementations in countries stimulated discussion of establishing
comprehensive training and industrial modernization programme in Cuba
supporting large number of industrial enterprises.
