| Strategic and production management of industrial
enterprise: application of UNIDO benchmarking and business excellence
tools Pharos + Produce-Plus, Bahrain
The workshop took place between 18 – 23 January
2003 at UNIDO ITPO/ARCEIT
office in Manama, Bahrain.
The objective of the workshop was to train executives and
consultants from Bahrain, Lebanon and Palestine in using of UNIDO
PHAROS - Business Navigator and Produce software for monitoring of
business performance and production benchmarking.

The training workshop was opened
by Mr. Gerardo Patacconi, UNIDO and Hashim Hussein, Head ITPO in Bahrain
followed by training sessions by Mr. Serge Golovanov (GOLEM, Austria)
and Terry James (MDA, UK) as UNIDO experts/trainers.

The workshop went
through very successfully and caused increased interest in further use
and application of the UNIDO Business Performance software and
continuous improvement methodology.

The working program of the course
consisted as follows:
1. Introduction
to the UNIDO business excellence tools: PHAROS,
Produce.
2. Basic
concepts of continuous improvement in quality, enterprise management and
performance, which were implemented in the UNIDO Business Performance
Software.
3. In
depth coverage of the PHAROS and Produce software packages, including
main concepts, features, functionality, objectives, methodology,
modules, user interface

4. Review
of potential applications for small and middle size industrial
enterprises, financial institutions working with business development
and executive education.
5. Defining
the stages and content of the preparatory work at the enterprises for
collecting data required for running the software, analysis of
enterprise information,
6. Reviewing
of documentation and training materials available, data preparations and
entry procedures, its potential sources, and preparation of the
operational database for the sample enterprise.

8. Practical
exercises and case studies.
9. Overview of the further
developments and evolution of PHAROS to modular comprehensive ERP type
system and use of key PHAROS/Produce indicators for real time monitoring
of businesses and benchmarking.
10. Discussion questions and
answers.

The participants of the workshop received the certificates.
The successful results caused increased interest of various institutions
in the region in establishment of long-term national and regional
programmes for small and medium industries to apply the UNIDO
continuous improvement methodology and Business Performance Software in
Bahrain and several other Gulf and Middle East countries.
