Havana, Cuba
The UNIDO Pharos training workshop for senior management of enterprises and business consultants was implemented in DISAIC, Havana, Cuba during 10-14 March 2008. The introduction into applying UNIDO PHAROS Software package for monitoring, measurement and benchmarking of enterprise performance for strategic and financial management was made during the workshop. Brief overview of production performance management and benchmarking using Pharos package was provided as well. Each trainee obtained complete set of UNIDO software and training and reference materials on CD-ROM. The workshop results and further steps supporting comprehensive training in industrial modernisation programme for enterprises and consultants in Cuba were discussed in meetings with representatives of MINVEC, Directorate of DISAIC and UNIDO Cuba.
New entrepreneurship facilitation programme "Management of Change" was launched in Lebanon. It is implemented by European - Lebanese Center for Industrial Modernization (ELCIM) under European Union support and supervision of Lebanese Ministry of Industry. The Programme effectively integrates the experience accumulated during implementation of UNIDO capacity building programmes for the last 7 years. INDIA GLOBAL SUMMIT ON SMEs took place in Delhi on 25-26 November 2005organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) jointly with Ministry of Small Scale Industries (SSI)and Government of India.
Professor Galo Craviero from Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas, Universidad de La Frontera (DIS - UFRO), Temuco, Chile shares his experience about using Pharos as strategic business management tool in vocational training of entrepreneurs at Faculty of Engineering. The comments are based on 5 year unique practices, interesting results and entrepreneurs feedback obtained.
Several new Calls for Proposals by European Commission related to SME development and support became the topics for discussions with various prospective partners in Central and Eastern Europe leading to setting up our first consortia.
We invite prospective partners such as entrepreneurs, consultants, NGOs and ICT developers to take part in the discussions for shaping up concrete proposals and teams, qualified and capable to apply for EC and possibly some other internationally available funding.

The WASME 2005 Convention took place in Bucharest within 16-18 May 2005. The event attracted attention of many governmental officials and NGOs from various countries. The topics discussed during the conference included Globalization and its consequence to the SMEs, Strategies and policies for supporting SMEs in the transition to the knowledge-based economy, Experiences in SMEs internationalization, Asian and African experience in SME internationalization, Asian and African experience in SME internationalization.
The issues related to improving productivity, competitiveness, quality and entrepreneurship capacities to manage innovation and business performancewere discussed during the presentation of Dr. S.Golovanov. EPIC as WASME 2005 Convention speaker. The presentation "Facilitating Knowledge based sustainability of economic growth by Training Programmes for SMEs applying UNIDO methodology” updated participants on results and prospects of using UNIDO methodology and IT tools for entrepreneurs for developing knowledge based entrepreneurship, improving business competitiveness, sustainability and managerial culture in general.
The UNIDO methodology and business performance management & measurement solutions for entrepreneurs draw strong interest by the conference participants from India, Turkey, Nigeria, Romania, Oman, Kenya, Italy, Egypt, Israel, Croatia. The follow-up meetings resulted in plans for several new projects in countries in collaboration with national counter-partners as well as applications for business partnerships in distribution of UNIDO methodology and software tools.
UNIDO methodology and business performance management solutions for enterprises became major topics of interest at awareness seminar for the members of the Industrial Committee and entrepreneurs, gathered in the Chamber of Commerce and Industries of the Eastern Province in Dammam on 2 May 2005. The seminar attracted attention of about 65 participants which took part in event and intensive Questions & Answers session discussing practicalities, results of the previous implementations, applications of the solutions for Saudi Arabian industries.
The presentations at the seminar were made by Dr. Serge Golovanov, Director, GOLEM IMS GMBH, Austria and Mr. Narayana Sharma, Director of the UNIDO Focal Point - National Training Centre in Bangalore who visited Dammam from 1 to 3 May 2005 by invitation of Chamber of Commerce and Industries of the Eastern Province and Elite Training Programmes Center, Jubail Industrial City.
Dr. S. Golovanov, Director of Enterprise Performance Improvement Centre visited China within the delegation of Austrian businessmen accompanying Dr. Schuessel, Federal Prime-Minister of Austria in the official visit which took place with 19 - 25 April 2005, The visit and meetings with governmental officials and representatives of training and consulting organizations in Peking, Shanghai and Nanjing allowed presenting the unique training and upgrading services for SMEs, contributing to sustainability of industrial developments in China as well as variety of prospective business partnerships in training, consulting and using of UNIDO software for improving productivity, competitiveness and quality of Chinese industries. The modality of Training and Upgrade programmes for entrepreneurs, its elaboration in Chinese industrial environment allow contributing to key governmental priorities in improving productivity, quality and competitiveness of quickly growing Chinese SME industries.

International Network for SME - INSME Association published extended interview with Dr. S. Golovanov, Director of Enterprise Performance Improvement Centre on 24 February 2005. The interview allows large number of INSME international visitors getting additional insight into EPIC activities, methodology and experiences based on UNIDO Business Performance Management Software helping SMEs measure enterprise business results and the impact of innovation.
Dr. S. Golovanov, Director of Enterprise Performance Improvement Centre visited India from 16th to 21st February 2005 within the delegation of Austrian businessmen accompanying Dr. Heinz Fischer, Federal President of Austria. The meetings which took place during the visit allowed establishing prospective partnerships in improving competitiveness, productivity, quality, sustainability and entrepreneur capacities of small and medium sized enterprises in India. Various leading Indian organizations supporting developments in SME sectors indicated interest in introduction of UNIDO methodology and IT tools into Indian industrial community. The modality of Training and Upgrade programmes for entrepreneurs, its transfer to Indian industrial environment and customized implementation answering the regional needs in particular states became the main focus of the discussions.
The collaborations allow Indian counterparts obtain assistance and know how in addressing key priorities of the country economic development outlined by the Government of India such as increasing competitiveness, productivity, quality and managerial capacity of entrepreneurs in main industrial sectors.

The first Dubai SME Conference and Exhibition, co-organised by Department of Economic Development (DED), INSME and Seagull Exhibitions and Conferences was held in the United Arab Emirates from January 31 to February 2, 2005, attracted great interest across the Middle East and the Gulf as well as visitors and participants from outside the region (19 countries were represented and over 200 people attended from the private and public sector).
The conference, which is being held for the first time in the region, focused on the significance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and their increasing contribution to the economy.
Dr. S.Golovanov was invited to contribute to the Conference as keynote speaker presenting UNIDO training and upgrade programmes for entrepreneurs improving productivity, quality, competitiveness and sustainability based on introduction of UNIDO information tools for business performance measurement, management and benchmarking.
New add-on module for Pharos addresses increasing demand for enterprise benchmarking by entrepreneurs and business consultants. It assists managers in easy obtaining of absolute and relative changes of major key business indicators. The values of these indicators are calculated for the current date and compared to any previous reference date. The data are extracted from the actual enterprise data available in Pharos and Produce Plus databases.
The benchmarking allows obtaining of the following indicator estimations:Net Profit (Pre Tax), Expenses Overall, Sales Revenue, Overall Added Value,Overall Added Value per Employee, Labour Ratio, OEE (Overall Equipment Efficiency). New business performance management tool suite by UNIDO
New major upgrade of business performance management tools for entrepreneurs and executives was released by GOLEM in collaboration with Manufacturing Improvement International Ltd. UK, (former MDA). The set integrates all software products and relevant introductory reference materials in one CD-ROM. The software products include Pharos - Business Navigator, advanced data export/import module for Pharos, Produce Plus including data entry, data management and graph modules as well as Financial Improvement Toolkit (FIT).

The UNIDO project in Colombia "Introduction of continuous improvement practices into selected enterprises in 4 regions of Colombia" started in January 2002 as pilot project to verify methodology and implementation in different industrial sectors. Its first phase included training of national consultants and executives from 4 regions in key industries as follows: Bogotá (leather industry), Eje Cafetero (electronics), Ibague (textile) and Barrancabermeja (metal processing). Several workshops and meetings took place in Colombia in March 2003 within the implementation of this project exactly one year after the first training in 2002. The workshop "Strategic and production management of industrial enterprise: application of UNIDO benchmarking and business excellence tools Pharos + Produce-Plus" took place between 18 – 23 January 2003 at UNIDO ITPO/ARCEIT office in Manama, Bahrain.
The objective of the workshop was to train executives and consultants from Bahrain, Lebanon and Palestine in using of UNIDO PHAROS - Business Navigator and Produce software for monitoring of business performance and production benchmarking.
The successful results of the workshop caused increased interest of various institutions in the region in establishment of long-term national and regional programmes for small and medium industries to apply the UNIDO continuous improvement methodology and Business Performance Software in Bahrain and several other Gulf and Middle East countries. >> read more
UNIDO news bulletin UNIDOScope published new information regarding the results of the user survey run in July 2002 among companies form 12 countries which installed and used PHAROS for the last 4 years. Of the respondents who said they were using the software (82%), all considered PHAROS a "useful and effective tool for managers".
Additional module for PHAROS with the name Produce-IT for production management and planning has been developed within the framework of collaboration between UNIDO, GOLEM and MDA.
New software is planned to be used for the Programmes for small and medium enterprises in a number of countries.

Bogota, Colombia
The Within one week of 16-23 March 2002 UNIDO software PHAROS - Business Navigator was successfully introduced into 8 shoe and 2 leather production factories in Bogota at the first stage of installations covering 40 industrial enterprises in Colombia. The enterprises had been selected for participation in the UNIDO Integrated Programme for Colombia to improve quality of production and management, productivity and competitiveness of national industry. The large training workshop in the software application for business performance monitoring took place in the University of Jorge Tadeo Lozano between 11-15 March 2002. Among 28 participants there were executives of the industrial enterprises, specialists from educational organisations and six national consultants, selected for the implementation of the Programme in the regions as trainers.

Training of trainer’s workshop on Pharos and MCCT in UN Center, Nairobi, Kenya
The workshop was prepared within the UNIDO Project of Application of quality principles to the food processing sector of 7 Sub-Sahara African countries. The training of trainers took place between 5 – 7 June 2000 at United Nations Office at Nairobi UN Complex, Gigiri, Nairobi.
New upgrade of PHAROS - Business Navigator is available!
Its development was initiated by a number of issues which had been pointed out by the managers of enterprises after series of installations in late 1999. Among major updates there are as follows: introduction of production schemes which allows for development of production options, any starting month of the year, user selected inflation option, support of financial figures in currencies with large number of zeroes, flexibility in defining production going stocks and sales, automated import into PHAROS from external software, improved and expanded HELP supporting user self learning.

Northern Russia: First installations of UNIDO software
The installations and enterprise management training were made by DDTC within the project of integrated programme for the Republic of Komi “Sustainable Industrial Development and Competitiveness”.
The objective of the mission was to carry out the training workshop on UNIDO software BEST, FIT, PHAROS and MCCT in the Komi Republic, assist national experts in the selection of suitable pilot enterprises, assist in collection of data for software input, review the preparatory work of the national experts, install the software and train users.
India: PHAROS installations in Automotive Industry
- The software installation and management training were made within the framework of the UNIDO Project “Strengthening of Small and Medium automotive component suppliers to deliver export quality products in India”.
The installations provided selected number of enterprises with opportunity to improve business management quality. The management of the 5 selected enterprises, which took part in the project highly, evaluated the software and its support for executive work.
New Pharos software presentation was developed by using one of the most innovative tools for developing interactive video on PC: Shockwave Flash by Macromedia. The video on the screen allows fast review of the main product features in multimedia format.

Joint UNIDO and DDTC case study on applying the UNIDO Business Performance Software to a furniture production enterprise in Bratislava, Slovakia started in May 1999. This study was made as the software applications for furniture industry in the country of transition.
The management of the furniture factory, "Melli Slovakia s.r.o." in Bratislava, were interested to trying the software as assistant to the management providing monitoring of actual production and enterprise operations. The duration of the case study was 6 months. Its objectives were aimed at obtaining relevant feedback from the management and setup sectoral benchmarking model. The case study at Melli Slovakia resulted in development of the sample databases for all UNIDO Business Performance Software products reflecting the furniture production sector.
